An update from The Sheridan Story

It’s been very busy at The Sheridan Story the last few months! We’ve been working hard to get food to as many kids as we can. Each week we distribute over 20,000 meals to kids in our community.

A few days ago I wrote an email update to The Sheridan Story’s Board of Directors. Afterwards, I realized it would be a great email to share with all of our supporters – you!

To read the update, scroll down to see the forwarded email.

Thank you for your support!

Hi all,

I hope everyone is enjoying the snow! It’s been a long time since I’ve sent an email update. Apologies for that. See below for some info

  • March is MN FoodShare’s March Campaign. Food and funding will be collected across the state by many hunger fighting organizations, including The Sheridan Story. That alone is obviously important, but what makes this campaign even more special is MN FoodShare provides us additional funding based on how much food and funding we collect in March. So, it’s a great time for a fundraiser and/or food drive! Let me know if you have something in mind.
  • We officially launched our 3 new bag options across our network – so we now have 4 options from which our families can choose. Reminder: the bag options are Meal, Meal – Hispanic/Latino/Latina, Meal – East African/Somali, Mobile (ready-to-eat items for kids in more transient situations).
  • Impact story:
    • I was in a meeting at the capital a few weeks ago with State Representative Erin Maye Quade and many of the hunger relief organizations in MN. Rep Maye Quade opened the meeting by sharing why she ran for office (this is her first term). She said she was with US Rep Keith Ellison when he visited TSS a few years ago. She was so passionate about the issue that she was talking his ear off in the car when they left. He told her if she’s so passionate about it, then she should run for office. So she did!

Yesterday, Rep Quade launched a Child Hunger Caucus.

      From Pioneer Press:  (https://www.twincities.com/2018/02/22/child-hunger-in-minnesota-theres-a-lot-of-it-and-lawmakers-want-solutions/)

“A bipartisan group of lawmakers say they are teaming up to fix what they call Minnesota’s most “solvable problem” — child hunger. State Reps. Erin Maye Quade, DFL-Apple Valley, and Rod Hamilton, R- Mountain Lake, announced Thursday they were forming a child hunger caucus to raise awareness and find new ways to feed hungry kids.”

  • Based on our revised forecast for FY18, we have about $165,000 left to raise by the end of June 2018. About $45,000 of that is already covered based on what we know/expect will be coming in from pledges, monthly giving, etc. So, an additional $120,000 or so is the gap we are working on. Your involvement is so important in helping us close that gap and feed as many kids as possible!
