Volunteer Spotlight: Order Builder Doug
As an Order Builder, Doug keeps healthy and fights child hunger at the same time by preparing boxes of food bags for delivery to our partner schools. Each of our partner schools receives a specific quantity of food based on the number of students enrolled in our Weekend Meal Program, and Doug is one of our dedicated Order Building volunteers who helps make sure every order is accurate and ready to go.
It’s a role that requires focus, organization, and plenty of movement – standing for long stretches, bending, and lifting boxes up to 30 pounds. It keeps Doug active, busy, and healthy, all while making a meaningful impact for kids across Minnesota.

Q: What’s your name and role at Every Meal?
Hi, I’m Doug. Doug Root. And I’ve been volunteering here at Every Meal for about 3 years. I do Order Building about once a week or so, and Deliver Driver about once a week or so also. Those are relatively strenuous things. Order Building is particularly challenging. Thirty pound boxes and maybe as many as 100 boxes in a shift. So that keeps me active, and busy, and healthy.
Q: What do you like about volunteering at Every Meal?
I keep coming back because the people here are nice, pleasant. It’s a fun place to be. The staff and the other volunteers are generally good people, and the mission is still uncompleted. And probably always will be. Hunger for kids is just a chronic problem and it’s good to be part of the solution to that.
Q. Favorite food or meal as a kid?
Of course it was my mom’s cooking. I had two parents that were home frequently, almost all the time. Dad had work but my mom’s meatloaf is what I remember most. Something out of the oven. It was warm, and healthy, and filling, and I was a growing kid at that time.
